Sex and the Senior Life
Sex isn't only for the young. In what is being called a seminal study, The New England Journal of Medicine reports that seniors are not only having sex, but more of it than you might think. Yes, the topic makes some people a little squeamish, but more of us are getting older and well….
Researchers surveyed more than 3,000 men and women between 57 and 85 years old. One of the most striking findings is that among the 75-85-year-olds who are still sexually active, more than half of them are having some kind of sex at least two to three times a month. But for the producers of ED treatments, such Pfizer, makers of Viagra, this may be the most important result: only 14% (one in seven men) has taken or is taking a prescription drug or some kind of supplement to fight erectile dysfunction even though nearly 40% said they have ED. So, that’s 85% of a potential market for Viagra and its close competitors, Cialis and Levitra.
I’m not sure where the idea came from that older people stopped having sex? In can’t really come as that much of a shock, when you think about it. Older people have time, they actually have money, and if they are sexually literate, they listen and have conversations and know to do it in the morning, when testosterone level is highest and not after a few drinks. And for women after menopause, use a lubricant. It used to be thought that when a women went through menopause, she wasn't interested anymore. That's nonsense. There was this attitude that if a man started to have a little bit of a belly, or if a woman's arms sagged a little bit, if the figure didn’t look the way it did before — that it would mean the end of sex.
It simply is not the case. People are getting older, people are getting healthier. People talk about sex more, there is more openness now. Fortunately, science has provided us with better health, better nutrition, and Viagra — everything that we can use in order to make the best of the golden years of our lives.
